The Race Was On

The Frostbite Foot Race was a success, dampened only somewhat by the rain. Margie dogs, pizza, and endless varieties of fried cheeses were just some of the fare greeting us at the various stops. Complimentary Penn Dark was served at the last stop. Enjoy some of the pics of the event. It will be time again next Thursday (1/17) for the BOARD to gather and start operationalizing some dreams and hopes into the valley's next Repeal Day Celebration. Location to be announced.

Frostbite

It's been awhile but the BOARD is getting back together and the blog will be updated again. Sort of. Many of us are meeting for the annual Frostbite Foodtaste Footrace. Hope everyone has been training because it can be a long one.

Participating in this year's event are the ACT, 804, Billy's Black & Gold, Our Gang's Lounge, Side Pocket Cafe, The Wave, The Marigold, Chestnut St. Café, Quaker Steak & Lube, an outdoor "Tailgate Stop" catered by Penn Pilsner and Basilone's of Farrell and Tully's. The final destination of the event will be Tully's where participants can warm up and watch the awards ceremony at 10 p.m.

For more information, check out the Vindy article.

Remember it's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Good Luck to everyone running in the event and may you all make it to the finish.

Repeal Day Videos

Not a video from our event but it's a funny newsreel. Stay Wet.

The day after: recollecting Repeal Days past

I did some research to try and compare the valley's first repeal day celebration of 1933 with our most recent attempt honor the day...
This photo appeared on the Sharon Herald's 12.6.2007 front page, with the following caption:
Mike Erme pours a beer sample for a patron at the Repeal Day beer tasting and fundraising event at Chestnut Street Cafe in Sharon. The benefit Wednesday for Shenango River Watchers marked the anniversary of the day Prohibition was repealed in 1933. As well as beer samples, the event featured a silent auction and music by the band Stretch.

The 12.6.1933 edition of the Herald story was titled, "State Receives Repeal Calmly: Wild Demonstrations Fail to Materialize". As it turned out, our forefathers did not have the time that we did to plan an event, and it was difficult to secure any real quantities of good liquor. The Pennsylvania general assembly was slow to define how they would control (restrict) the distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages. Their act actually passed the day after the repeal of prohibition. Leave it to Pennsylvania to miss the first Repeal Day.
I had a great time at our event, to be known as the 74th, even if it lacked wild demonstrations.
